Financial goals are far easier to work toward when they are specific, measurable, and tied to a realistic timeframe, rather than left as vague intentions.

Make goals specific

"Save more" is difficult to act on. "Save a defined amount per month toward a specific target" gives you something concrete to track and adjust.

Separate short-, medium-, and long-term goals

Short-term goals (under a year) might include building an emergency fund. Medium-term goals (one to five years) might include a major purchase. Long-term goals (five-plus years) often relate to retirement or other major life milestones. Each timeframe may call for a different approach to saving or investing.

Revisit and adjust

Life circumstances change. Reviewing goals periodically — and adjusting contributions or timelines as needed — keeps a financial plan realistic rather than aspirational.
